Monitoring the Root Fire (09/01/2025 4:30 PM)

The City of Dunsmuir is actively monitoring the Root Fire, located 3.8 miles west of Castle Crag State Park.

The fire started earlier today, and as of 4:30 PM on Monday, September 1st, 2025, the Root fire is estimated at 80 acres. Evacuation warnings are in place to the west of Dunsmuir.

The Root Fire has expanded fairly rapidly this afternoon, but is currently not posing a threat to the City of Dunsmuir.

However, residents are encouraged to take steps to ensure they have the most accurate, up-to-date information possible.

Here are five things you can do to prepare.

1) Sign up for Ready Siskiyou Alerts (readysiskiyou.gov). Once signed up for these alerts, you will receive notifications of an evacuation impacting you directly on your cell phone or Landline in real-time. You can’t be notified if we don’t know how to notify you.

2) Know your evacuation Zone number (link). Click the link and enter your address. Each area of town has a predetermined evacuation zone number.

3) Download the Watch Duty app, and enable alerts for the Root Fire. Search “Watch Duty” on your smartphone app store.

4) Follow the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page.

5) Have a plan and have a go bag ready with important items you can’t live without. And stay informed by taking all the steps listed above.
