Mossbrae Falls Trail Summit with Union Pacific

‘California’s City of Waterfalls’, Dunsmuir, hosted a summit with Union Pacific on Tuesday to discuss building public trail access to Mossbrae Falls via the Hedge Creek Falls trail.

Union Pacific had members of their public projects team and real estate team present to tour Mossbrae and get familiar with the proposed trail connection along Union Pacific tracks to the falls.

Union Pacific officials from as far away as Omaha and Denver were in attendance.

Also in attendance were a representative from Senator Megan Dahle's office, Siskiyou County Supervisor Ed Valenzuela, Mayor Michael Clarno, and Councilmember Bryan.

The Summit marks a new milestone in the slow but steady process of building a trail to Mossbrae Falls. Key Union Pacific officials had the opportunity to see the falls for the first time, recognizing the importance of building public access to this beautiful natural resource.

In recent years, the number of visitors to the falls has continued to increase. According to Placer AI in 2024, 39,800 people visited Hedge Creek Falls, and 18,900 people made the dangerous and illegal journey along the railroad tracks to Mossbrae Falls.

These illegal trips along the railroad tracks have resulted in two individuals being hit by trains in 2011 and 2019, and earlier this year, a woman died crossing the Sacramento River attempting to access Mossbrae Falls.

The City of Dunsmuir is committed to partnering with Union Pacific to ensure the construction of a safe public access trail to the falls. We look forward to sharing more updates soon. In the meantime, consider donating to the Mossbrae Falls trail project (link).
