City of Dunsmuir Snow Removal Policy

Here are the City of Dunsmuir’s protocols for snow removal operations

Goal: the ultimate goal of snow removal is to allow for emergency vehicles, mail delivery, and other vital services to be conducted without obstruction. A secondary, but no less important goal, is to ensure that our citizens are able to commute back and forth to work.

Snow removal generally takes place when we’ve accumulated approximately three inches of snow on the ground. On street parking is prohibited during snow removal, therefore, vehicles left on the street may be subject to tow at the owner’s expense (Municipal Code 10.04.010). Snow plows will complete a minimum of two passes down each side of the street in order to keep travel lanes open to safe passage. Resident are asked to stay informed about forecasted snow accumulations and to plan accordingly.

Designated Parking Areas: Limited parking is available at the South City Hall parking lot, North City Hall parking lot and at the community building in North Dunsmuir. These areas are for temporary use during snow storms and are not meant for long-term storage.

There are several streets that are designated as priority routes and will be the first to be plowed. They include:

·        Dunsmuir Ave. from the South City limits to Siskiyou Ave.

·        Siskiyou Ave.

·        Sacramento Ave.

·        Willow and Oak Streets

·        Butterfly Ave through Gillis Street and around the loop to Scherrer Ave.

·        Branstetter Street from its intersection with Shasta Ave. and Dunsmuir Ave.

·        Blacksmith Hill, River Ave. including the loop to Stagecoach Rd. to its intersection with Dunsmuir Ave.

·        Florence Loop

After priority routes have been plowed, secondary streets will follow.

Sidewalks snow removal is the responsibility of the property/business. Businesses see City Code 10.24.020 (i) and 12.08.040 Section B.

Post storm, Business District clean-up will begin from the South City Hall parking lot Spruce Street.

Designated snow storage areas include:

·        Empty lots on Florence Loop

·        The South end of the 800’ Bridge

·        Across the street from the Chevron Station

·        The parking lot at Hedge Creek Falls

Please help our crews by:

1)     Ensuring that you do not shovel or blow snow into the street as it can create a hazard for pedestrians and drivers.

2)     During snow removal, do not allow children or pets to play on our near snow berms.

3)     Sidewalks and driveway snow removal is the responsibility of the adjacent owner.

4)     Place garbage containers in your driveway and out of the path of plows

5)     Snowplows make frequent backing maneuvers. Please keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the rear of snow plows. Always remember that if you can’t see the plow driver’s mirror, they can’t see you.
